Every year it's the same question: what do I buy the hiker who already has everything? Honestly, the answer is simple. Who wants socks for Christmas when you can have something that will last a lifetime, not a year? Good gifts for hikers don't need batteries, an app or a 40-page manual. They need to survive being dropped off a rock, chucked in a pack and forgotten in the car boot for a week.
Full disclosure: I make titanium gear, so yes, I'm biased. But I didn't pick this list on a whim. These are the pieces that have actually sold best on our store over the last six months, split into three budgets with three picks each. Think of it as the crowd-sourced shortlist, with my commentary thrown in for free.
Titanium fits the buy once, use for life way of thinking. It doesn't rust, it doesn't hold onto last week's flavours and it shrugs off the kind of abuse that would finish off plastic in a season. So whether you're shopping for a summit chaser, a weekend camper or someone who just likes nice things on their desk, here are my outdoor gift ideas.
This tier is for the people you know well enough to buy for, but not well enough to know their shoe size: the colleague two desks down, the neighbour who signs for your parcels, the Secret Santa name you had to look up on the company directory. The safe move is a candle or a mug with a pun on it. Don't do that. Give them something totally different that they won't see coming, and watch them quietly become your favourite person in the office.
Our best-selling pick under $25 is the Titanium Double Wall Cup 125ml in sandblasted titanium, at $15.50. It's a proper little tea cup with a double wall, so you can hold it with hot tea inside and keep the skin on your fingers. It weighs 50g, it won't crack like your favourite ceramic cup and there's no metallic aftertaste. Tea, the morning espresso or a small celebratory dram at the top: it's not fussy, and neither should you be.
For the hiker who boils water in whatever's nearest, the Ultralight Titanium Cup With Lid in the 350ml size is $17.50. It's single-wall, so it goes straight on a gas stove to boil water or rehydrate dinner. The handles fold away, the lid has drain holes for pouring off cooking water and it all lives in a mesh drawstring bag. It's a cup, a pot and a snack stash, which is three gifts for the price of one if you're counting.
Every gift list needs a wildcard, and ours is the Titanium Square Utensil at $14.49. It's 15g of Grade 1 titanium, made for scooping and spreading: jam, stew from the bottom of the pot, the last of the yoghurt. The sandblasted finish resists smudges, and it nests with SilverAnt cookware. It looks unusual, and that's half the fun of unwrapping it.
Now we're talking about a good mate, or someone you're fond of in a month when cash is a bit tight. Fifty dollars is ample for a good friend, and frankly generous for that distant cousin, aunt or uncle you only see at weddings. These are everyday upgrades that work as hard at the office as they do at camp, and gifts for campers that nobody ever thinks to buy for themselves.
Our number one seller overall, and I'm not surprised. The Titanium 3-Piece Cutlery Set in sandblasted titanium is $27.49 for a knife, fork and spoon that weigh 41g together. The serrated knife will even get through a steak. They clip together with the included titanium carabiner and slide into a drawstring bag. It's perfect for the person who takes a lunchbox to work every day and is quietly at war with the office's plastic forks.
The Ultralight Leakproof Titanium Container 280ml in sandblasted titanium is $32.49 and handles coffee beans, tea leaves, yoghurt, pickles or broth. It has a watertight seal, so it's fine even after an accidental dip in a stream. With the lid off you can heat broth over a flame, and it's freezer-safe for meal prep, just not microwave-safe. It also nests inside 500ml and larger titanium pots and cups. It's the lunchbox that never smells of last week's curry.
Is it a plate? Is it a frying pan? Yes. The medium Titanium Camping Plate 900ml is $35.99 and weighs 148g. It's built to go over a campfire or stove to fry eggs, warm bread or sear meat, and then you eat off it. Fewer things to wash up means more time sitting by the fire pretending you'll do it later. If you ever add the 1200ml plate, the 900ml nests inside it.
This is the serious tier, for the people who'd genuinely be disappointed by socks. These are the gifts people actually want and will use, the ones that go in the pack every trip and sit on the desk every Monday. Spend here and you're not just buying a present, you're buying the thing they'll still be reaching for when everything else from this Christmas is long gone.
The bottle our customers buy more than any other is the Round Titanium Water Bottle 800ml at $77.49. It weighs 166g, it's single-wall titanium and it has an all-titanium clip-top lid with a food-grade silicone seal, so it's leakproof. It comes with a thermal sleeve, and because it's single-wall you can boil water in it on a gas stove. Your drink never picks up a weird taste. It's built for the trail, the desk and a lifetime of both.
For the friend who drinks coffee at every red light, the Titanium Water Bottle Wide Mouth Screw Top in 600ml is $67.99. It weighs 150g, fits a car cup holder and has a wide mouth that suits hot drinks. A thermal sleeve is included. Best of all, there's no lingering coffee taste when they switch back to water. Two bottles in one tier? The numbers don't lie, and hikers clearly take hydration seriously.
Last but definitely not least is the Crystallized Titanium Insulated Travel Coffee Mug in Elegant Black, at $69.99. It holds 400ml and weighs 243g. The vacuum double wall keeps drinks warmer or cooler for longer. The leak-proof lid has a sip opening and a built-in straw, and there's a carry strap for clipping it to a bag. Because it's crystallized, no two mugs look quite the same, and it comes in five colours if black isn't their thing.
If you can't decide, go by budget and you won't go far wrong. All nine were in stock when I wrote this, and every one comes with a lifetime warranty. If you want to browse a little wider, our gifts under $25 and gifts under $50 collections are a good place to start. Socks are lovely, but they're not still in your kit bag ten Christmases later. Titanium is.
Happy gifting, and let me know in the comments what's on your own list this year.
To your next adventure!
