I still remember walking into GO Outdoors as a teenager in the UK, grabbing the cheapest tent on the shelf, and heading to Reading Festival. Same story at Wireless in London. Day tickets or weekend tickets didn’t matter. The only goal was to get there, pitch up, and lose myself in the music.
Almost a decade later I did it again in Tokyo. I wanted to see The XX and Gorillaz at Fuji Rocks Festival, so I walked into a Decathlon, bought another cheap tent, and that was that.
There’s nothing wrong with those choices. Getting outside and feeling the ground under your feet is the most important thing. Nature does something to us that nothing else can. Looking back though, I realise we can be more careful with the gear we take.
That tension between access and longevity sits at the heart of how I think about sustainability at SilverAnt.
Titanium starts as an ore. It is a precious metal. Pulling it out of the ground and turning it into usable sheets takes energy. There is no way around that.
The same is true of the alternatives. Stainless steel still needs iron mined and processed. Aluminium begins as an ore that has to be extracted and refined. Plastic comes from fossil fuels. Every durable outdoor material carries a footprint at the start of its life.
For the past eight years of building SilverAnt this reality has stayed with me. We never set out to make gear that looks good for a season and then gets replaced. The question has always been simpler: how do we make something worth the intensity of its origin?
In 2026 that question feels sharper. The outdoor industry is full of products designed to be replaced. Fast fashion has a clear outdoor equivalent. I believe the better path is purpose-driven and built to last — buy once, use for life, repair when needed, and pass it on if you can.
This ethos of course is not championed by me, but instead we walk on the path of others before us who created and championed the very same ethos. A big inspiration for me has always been Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins.

I sat down recently with a potential distributor in Scandinavia. We talked for a long time about products that carry real stories. Not marketing stories. The kind written into the gear through years of use.
I own a North Face Summit Series jacket in a green colour I have never seen them produce again. It has been with me on multi-pitch climbs. It has travelled half the world. The original seams were glued. Over time those seams failed, so I had the jacket stitched. More than once. It now carries visible stitching where the original construction gave way. I will keep stitching it. I am not getting rid of it.

On my most recent trip back to the UK, my grandfather was downsizing to something more manageable as he is almost 80. He went through his gear and gave me an Opinel knife that is at least 30 years old. You can see the blade has been sharpened again and again over three decades. It is still sharp as anything. I use it regularly on my own adventures. Viewing it next to a new Opinel, you can see how the design has changed. The old one still does the job.
That jacket and that knife both have stories. Most of the gear I truly care about does.
The same is true of my large titanium water bottle. It is four years old. It has dents and dings I would never trade. Those marks are part of its character. It has been my daily bottle for a long time, alongside the 1200ml version, and it is still going strong.

Titanium, when made properly, collects these stories. It does not fade the way coatings do. It does not corrode. It does not need replacing every few seasons. It simply keeps going.
If you want a deeper look at why titanium holds up differently from other materials, I wrote about it in our Stainless Steel VS Titanium guide.
We cannot change the energy required to extract titanium. What we can control is everything that happens after the sheets reach our factory.
We design for longevity first. Every product is made to be used hard for decades. We stand behind that with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. If something goes wrong because of how we made it, we will sort it. That is the logical extension of wanting people to keep their gear rather than replace it.
Packaging is another deliberate choice. We use simple packaging. No heavy colourful inks. No unnecessary layers. Some people expect premium products to arrive in glossy, heavily printed boxes. We made a different decision. That box will end up in a recycling stream or a landfill depending on the country. The less material and the less ink we put into it, the better. It may look quieter on the shelf, but it feels more honest.
Inside the factory, we recycle what we can. Scrap is not treated as waste if we can avoid it. The goal is closed-loop thinking at the scale we operate.
Beyond the product itself, every order on our Shopify store supports real-world impact through our partnership with Greenspark. Over the last three years we have planted nearly 30,000 trees, captured carbon, and helped rescue plastic from the ocean. For me that number is massive. It turns every purchase into something that gives back — actual trees in the ground and communities supported around the world.

The most sustainable piece of gear is the one that does not need replacing. A titanium water bottle or cook set that lasts twenty or thirty years spreads its original footprint across decades of use. Compare that to cheaper options discarded after a few seasons of festival camping or weekend trips.
I am not saying everyone needs titanium. Access matters. Getting outdoors matters more than the quality and material of your tent or water bottle. When people are ready to invest in gear that will stay with them, titanium offers a clear path away from the disposable cycle.
It is not perfect. No material is. Once it is refined and formed with care, it becomes one of the most capable materials we have for the kind of outdoor life many of us want — one where the same tools accompany us for years, collect stories, and eventually get passed on rather than thrown away.
That is the version of sustainability I can stand behind. Not the loudest or the trendiest. Just the one that lasts.
To your next adventure!
