Sandblasted vs. Crystallized Titanium: Which Finish Should You Choose?
If you read our last article on SilverAnt's titanium evolution, you'll know we've spent the last few years pushing titanium finishes further than most factories and brands bother to. But that piece was about where we're headed. This one is about the decision actually in front of you right now: sandblasted or crystallized, and which one you should choose?
Short answer: it comes down to personal preference, not performance. But that answer deserves some explaining, so let's get into exactly how each finish is made, and what that means for the piece of gear you'll actually be using on trail.

What Is Sandblasted Titanium?
Sandblasted titanium is the classic, industry-standard finish, and it exists for a genuinely practical reason.
When we receive raw titanium sheets, they arrive polished. But polished titanium is fragile in one specific way: it picks up blemishes and marks incredibly easily during handling and manufacturing. A polished sheet that looks flawless on day one can pick up scuffs just from being moved through the production process. Think stamping, welding, etc. Sandblasting solves this.
The process itself happens inside a completely sealed machine, with an operator working through built-in gloves. Thousands of tiny sand beads are fired across the surface of the titanium at speed, essentially a micro-abrasive finish that evens everything out and leaves that familiar matte, frosted texture. Afterward, especially around threads, handles, and other detailed areas, there's residue left behind from the sand beads. So every sandblasted piece then goes through a deep cleaning bath to remove all of it before it's ready to leave the factory.
This is genuinely universal. Whether a titanium company produces in-house or outsources it, sandblasting is what nearly every piece of titanium gear on the market has gone through at some stage.
What Is Crystallized Titanium?
Crystallized titanium starts from a completely different process.
Instead of an abrasive sand finish, we use specialized vacuum-sealed machines that reach temperatures up to 1,600°C. Because the chamber is fully vacuum-sealed, that combination of extreme heat and immense pressure is what produces the crystallized surface. A unique texture and pattern where no two pieces come out quite the same. There's no sandblasting step involved at all. The finish comes directly from the crystallization process itself.
We still run crystallized pieces through the same cleaning process afterward, simply to remove any potential residue from the machine, but the texture itself is entirely a product of heat and pressure, not abrasion.
Crystallization is still a relatively new frontier in titanium manufacturing. Over the last three to four years, SilverAnt has been one of a small number of titanium manufacturers in Asia pioneering it at scale. Being one of the larger titanium factories in the world gave us the ability to actually invest in developing this, rather than just adopting an off-the-shelf process everyone else uses.

Is One Stronger Than the Other?
No. This is the part people are often surprised by.
Sandblasting and crystallization are both surface finishes; they change the texture and appearance of the titanium, not its underlying material properties. A sandblasted bottle and a crystallized bottle made from the same titanium grade are equally strong, equally durable, and will perform identically under stress.
Both also carry the same core benefits that make titanium worth choosing over other materials in the first place. Titanium is around 40% lighter than steel while offering comparable strength, which is where that excellent weight-to-strength ratio people talk about actually comes from. Both finishes are also fully biocompatible, naturally antibacterial, and resistant to mold, properties that come from the titanium itself, not the surface treatment applied to it.
So if you're choosing based on which will hold up better, or which is the "tougher" option, you can stop weighing that up entirely. There isn't a wrong answer on that front.
So What Should You Actually Base Your Decision On?
Appearance, and specifically, how the gear looks after you've actually used it.
This is where the two finishes genuinely diverge. Sandblasted titanium's matte texture, especially on something you're handling constantly like a water bottle, mug, or EDC item, tends to show fingerprints and blemishes over time. It's not a durability issue, the gear is just as strong as ever, but it can start to look a little dirty or greasy, especially if it's picked up food, oils, or other liquids that need a proper clean to fully lift.
Crystallized titanium doesn't have that problem. The faceted texture simply doesn't show fingerprints and smudges the way a flat matte surface does, so it tends to look cleaner for longer, even with heavy daily use.
Beyond that, it really is a matter of taste. Some people love the classic, understated look of sandblasted titanium and have carried the same piece for years without a second thought. Others prefer the individuality of crystallized titanium, the fact that the texture catches light differently and no two pieces are the same.
Our Take
If you want the traditional titanium look and don't mind giving your gear the occasional wipe-down, sandblasted is an excellent choice, it's the finish that's proven itself for decades.
If you're after something that stays looking sharp with less maintenance, especially for gear you're handling daily like a water bottle or travel mug, crystallized is worth the look.
Either way, you're getting the same titanium underneath. The choice is really just: which one do you want to look at?
